Joann Farrell Quinn, PhD, MBA
Joann Farrell Quinn, PhD, MBA is associate professor in the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and the Muma College of Business, where she teaches introduction to research methods, leadership and emotional intelligence. Dr. Quinn is also the Academic Director of the new TGH-USF People Development Institute, a collaboration between Tampa General Hospital and the University of South Florida Muma College of Business.
Dr. Quinn’s research interests include emotional and social and related competencies, leadership and the social construction of identity. Currently, she is involved in various research projects on coaching, emotional intelligence, grit, burnout, and empathy, including National Science Foundation funded work to increase diversity and equity in graduate education admissions.
Dr. Quinn is active in leadership in medical education and was the founding convener of a special interest group, Innovation and Leadership in Medical Education, within the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC Southern Group on Educational Affairs (SGEA). This group has sprouted many collaborations and events bringing together those focused on leadership in medical education across the continuum.
Prior to academia, Dr. Quinn worked domestically and internationally in the capital markets and investment management industry for over a decade and is a past president of the Security Traders Association of Florida.
In 2020 Dr. Quinn published a text to support leadership education and development within medical education, Cultivating Leadership in Medicine, with co-author Bobbie Ann Adair White.
Dr. Quinn earned her PhD in Management: Designing Sustainable Systems from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University,
a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science from the University of Rochester.
Dr. Quinn is also a Pilates junkie, lover of good (great) wine and food, wife to Harold (“Q”), and mother to one human child (Ean, currently 9), three rescue dogs (all under 7 pounds), two rescue cats, and one feral cat and one stray cat who were inherited from the neighborhood.
